This was a stand up bass similar in principle to the old wash tub bass.  The wash tub bass had one string which was stretched by pulling back on the broom stick changing the tone.  On this bass the string was attached to a lever at the bottom which was also the foot or stand.  You could fret just like a traditional bass, but also push down and cause the lever to stretch the string at the same time.
